How to Plan a Proposal in Yosemite National Park

Hey There!

I'm michelle!

I’m Michelle — I am an elopement and wedding photographer with a big heart for storytelling and an even bigger love for documenting couples as they truly are. I’m here to celebrate all kinds of love, create space for joy, and capture the magic in the in-between moments.

Planning a Surprise Proposal in Yosemite? Here’s Everything You Need to Know

If you’re dreaming about popping the question in Yosemite, first of all, I’m so excited for you! This place has a kind of magic that’s hard to put into words. Towering granite cliffs, misty waterfalls, crisp mountain air, and the kind of light that just glows at sunrise and sunset. It’s the perfect backdrop for something as big and beautiful as a Yosemite proposal.

Whether you’re planning something wildly romantic and adventurous or something low-key and heartfelt, this guide will walk you through how to plan a Yosemite proposal that feels like you.

First Things First: What Time of Year Is Best?

Yosemite is stunning year-round, but your experience will be shaped by the season.

  • Winter (Dec–March): If you’re into snowy landscapes and cozy vibes, winter in Yosemite is magical. Fewer crowds, quiet trails, and snow-dusted granite make it seriously dreamy. Just be mindful of road closures, some high-elevation spots like Glacier Point and Tioga Road are closed in winter.
  • Spring (April–May): Waterfalls are raging in spring, and the valley is bright green. Still fewer crowds, especially at sunrise.
  • Summer (June–August): Gorgeous weather, everything’s open!! But it’s peak season, so expect more people and a need for early planning (especially reservations).
  • Fall (Sept–Nov): Crisp air, golden leaves, and quieter trails return. Glacier Point usually closes at the end of October.

Tip #1: Sunrise Is Where It’s At

Yosemite at sunrise? Chef’s kiss.

If privacy is a priority, or you just want that golden light without the midday crowds, early morning is the way to go. Most people aren’t hiking at 5–6am, which means you’ll have the space (and silence) to soak in the moment.

Hot tip: If you’re not sure you or your partner are morning people, adrenaline + nerves + proposal butterflies usually override the early wake-up call. Promise.

But Honestly? Any Time of Day Can Be Magical

Don’t stress if sunrise isn’t realistic for you. Sunset in Yosemite is insanely beautiful, especially if you’re dreaming of golden cliffs, pink skies, or a quiet moment just before twilight.

And truly? There’s no “wrong” time to propose here. Midday proposals in the snow can feel crisp and radiant. A moody overcast afternoon? Romantic in its own way. The light in Yosemite shifts constantly, and part of the beauty is embracing what the park gives you.

We’ll plan your timing based on what matters most—privacy, light, accessibility—and make sure it feels natural and unforgettable, no matter the hour.

Tip #2: Choose Your Proposal Location Thoughtfully

There are so many beautiful places to propose in Yosemite, and the right spot depends on your vibe.

Here are a few questions I ask when helping couples plan their Yosemite proposal:

  • Do you want a wide, epic view or something more intimate and wooded?
  • How far are you comfortable hiking (or snowshoeing)?
  • Do you want iconic Yosemite backdrops (like Tunnel View, Taft Point, or Yosemite Falls)? Or something a little more off-the-beaten-path?
  • Are you proposing in the valley in winter or heading up higher in another season?

Best Locations for a Yosemite Proposal

There’s no shortage of jaw-dropping spots for your Yosemite proposal—but choosing the right one depends on your vibe, the season, and how much adventuring you’re up for. Here are some of my favorite locations, whether you’re going for accessible and iconic or quiet and tucked-away:

Tunnel View

If you want that classic Yosemite postcard moment, this is it. Tunnel View gives you sweeping views of El Capitan, Bridalveil Fall, and Half Dome—all in one frame. It’s accessible year-round and seriously glows at sunrise.

Accessibility ♿️

Accessibility – Wheelchair accessible

The viewpoint is right off the parking lot with a paved overlook. It’s flat, easy to navigate, and offers one of the most iconic views in the park. Super romantic at sunrise.

Artist Point

Want the Tunnel View backdrop without the crowd? Artist Point is your hidden gem. A moderate 2-mile hike leads you to a secluded version of the same iconic view, but with a peaceful, off-the-beaten-path vibe. Especially perfect for couples wanting intimacy and epic scenery.

Lower Yosemite Falls

Short walk, big impact. Lower Yosemite Falls is accessible most of the year (except in extreme icy conditions) and puts you right at the base of one of North America’s tallest waterfalls. In winter, it’s icy and magical. In spring, it’s a full-on thunderous show.

Accessibility – Partially wheelchair accessible

The eastern portion of the Lower Yosemite Fall Trail is paved and accessible (about ½ mile). You can get very close to the base of the falls

Sentinel Bridge

For a romantic view of Half Dome reflected in the Merced River, this one’s a winner. Super accessible, especially pretty in fall and winter when the water is calm and the crowds thin out.

Accessibility – ♿️

Accessibility – Wheelchair accessible

There’s nearby parking and paved walkways along the riverbank. Great views of Half Dome and the Merced River with minimal walking or incline.

Yosemite Valley Meadow

Picture open snow-covered fields, towering granite walls, and quiet all around. The Valley meadows (like Cook’s or Leidig Meadow) are perfect for winter proposals—easy to access and beautiful in every direction.

Accessibility – ♿️

Accessibility – Partially wheelchair accessible

Many areas of the valley have paved paths along the edges of meadows, and boardwalks or flat dirt trails that can be navigated with a wheelchair (especially with assistance or all-terrain wheels).

Taft Point (Summer–Fall only)

Epic. Cliffside. Unforgettable. Taft Point is a short-but-steep 2.2-mile round-trip hike with one of the most dramatic views in the park. Ideal for couples who want adventure, intimacy, and golden hour drama. Closed in winter due to snow.

Not Accessibile – ♿️

Glacier Point (Summer–Fall only)

If you’re visiting when the road’s open (typically May–October), Glacier Point is a proposal dream. Sweeping views, minimal walking, and especially gorgeous at sunset. Sunrise here is also lovely and much less crowded.

Accessibility – ♿️

Accessibility – Wheelchair accessible

When the road is open, the main overlook is wheelchair accessible with paved paths and accessible parking. The views are insane and there’s room to set up for a private moment.

Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias

Want a proposal surrounded by ancient trees? Mariposa Grove is your enchanted forest moment. It’s about a 2-mile hike to the Grizzly Giant and other iconic sequoias, and it feels deeply peaceful—especially in shoulder seasons. Note: It’s in the southern part of the park, so plan for extra drive time.

Accessibility – ♿️

Accessibility – Partially wheelchair accessible

The Big Trees Loop Trail (0.3 mi) near the parking lot is wheelchair accessible and still brings you up close to some sequoias. The longer trails to Grizzly Giant or Tunnel Tree are not accessible, but the front section is still gorgeous and serene.

Bridalveil Fall Viewpoint

Easy and quick, with a dramatic waterfall payoff. Bridalveil Fall is accessible most of the year (except during certain renovation closures) and is perfect if you want a little bit of mist and motion in your backdrop.

Accessibility – ♿️

Accessibility – Partially wheelchair accessible

The newly renovated trail (as of 2023–2024) includes accessible pathways, though the final updates may vary. It’s worth checking the latest info before planning here.

Swinging Bridge Area

A quiet, charming little spot with Merced River views, open space, and fewer tourists. Great for couples who want to keep it peaceful and pretty without hiking.

Accessibility – ♿️

Accessibility – Wheelchair accessible

The main picnic area and bridge path are paved. There are accessible bathrooms and views of the Merced River and Yosemite Falls. Romantic and mellow.

Tip #3: Think Through How You Want It to Feel

You know your partner best. So think about how you want the moment to feel—and how they might want to look for this big milestone.

Some questions to consider:

  • Would your partner want to be dressed up for this?
  • Are they more into cozy outdoor wear and hiking boots?
  • Would they feel more confident knowing photos will be taken, or do they thrive on being surprised and spontaneous?

A couple of creative ways to make sure they feel great:

  1. Book a “couples session” and pop the question at the beginning. They’ll already be dressed up, expecting photos, and we get to capture all the raw emotion right away.
  2. Pack a special outfit as a surprise. Propose in your comfy hiking clothes, then change into something a little fancier for dreamy post-proposal portraits.

Either way, we’ll make space for whatever fits your relationship and energy best.

Tip #4: Know the Logistics (AKA the Less Fun, But Super Important Part)

Here’s what you’ll need to keep in mind when planning your Yosemite proposal:

Park Reservations & Entry Fees

  • Yosemite often uses a reservation system during peak times (especially spring through fall). You’ll need to book an entrance reservation on www.Recreation.gov ahead of time.
  • Entry fees are $35 per car and are valid for 7 days.

Parking & Timing

  • Certain trailheads and parking lots fill up early, especially in summer and fall. That’s another reason I recommend sunrise proposals: easier parking, less stress.
  • Winter requires more flexibility (roads can close unexpectedly, so having backup spots is always smart). Don’t forget your chains for your car, you never know when an unexpected snow storm can roll through

Photography Permits

  • No worries! Permits for simple proposals/ engagement sessions are not necessary. But you do need a permit for a wedding, you can find more information here.

How to Book Your Proposal Session With Me

If you’re ready to make this moment unforgettable, here’s how to get started:

  1. Reach out via my contact form and tell me about your vision. Don’t worry if you don’t have every detail figured out yet!
  2. We’ll chat about your relationship, what kind of proposal you’re dreaming of, and the best date and location based on the time of year.
  3. I’ll help you plan the logistics (including permits, lighting, and location scouting).
  4. You propose, I document, and together we create something you’ll remember forever.
