Graduation is a time for celebration, and what better way to commemorate this special occasion than with some graduation photos? Here are five tips to help you get the most out of your graduation photos:

My top 5 graduation photo tips

  1. Book a photographer. This is probably the most important tip. You want to make sure you have a professional photographer who can capture your special day in a beautiful and memorable way. Start looking for photographers early, as they tend to book up quickly. I would recommend booking your photographer 5-6 months before you want your photos. Also make sure to account for editing time, if you have your photos done in early May, you might not get your images back until June. So plan ahead.
  2. Book hair and makeup appointments. You want to look your best on your graduation day, so book hair and makeup appointments well in advance. Hair and make up is not always necessary but a great way to boost your confidence and pamper yourself for the day of.
  3. Review the style guide. Check out my graduation session style guide here!
  4. Grab your cap and gown. You can usually pick up your cap and gown from your school’s bookstore or from a designated location on campus. Usually cap and gown pick up is in March. Be sure to do this early, as caps and gowns can sell out quickly. Bring bobby pins to your session to help secure your cap. If you miss the pick up, I have had clients borrow from friends for their portraits.
  5. Bring your props to commemorate your college experience. Were you into ceramics, dancing, spending all nighters at the library? Let’s personalize your session and capture your personality and interests throughout college.

  • BONUS TIP! Check your school’s event page. End of the year there are many events around your campus. Make sure to check your schools calendar when booking your session. The less people in the background the better, so it’s best to not show up and there’s a carnival or campus event happening. (Which has happened before, hence the warning!)

By following these tips, you can ensure that your graduation photos are everything you’ve dreamed of. So relax, enjoy your day, and let me capture you!

Here are some additional tips for getting great graduation photos:

  • Choose a location that is meaningful to you. This could be your school’s campus, a favorite spot in your hometown, or even a national landmark.
  • Bring props. Graduation caps, tassels, and flowers are all great props that can add to your photos.
  • Be creative. Don’t be afraid to get creative with your poses. Try some candid shots, or have your photographer take some fun and unique photos.
  • Have fun! Graduation is a time to celebrate, so make sure you have fun with your photos. Relax, laugh, and enjoy the moment.
