Each location includes details about parking, bathrooms, distance from downtown Fresno, and the best time of year to visit so you can choose the spot that matches your vision and comfort.

Whether you’re dreaming up your engagement session, celebrating a family milestone, or simply craving updated portraits in a beautiful setting, there’s a place on this list that fits your vibe. These locations aren’t just pretty backdrops—they’re places where memories unfold, laughter echoes, and golden light wraps around real moments.

1. Winton Park and Avocado Lake

Located outside of Sanger, Winton Park and Avocado Lake Park sit along the Kings River and offer a peaceful mix of open fields, gentle hills, and water views. The two parks are only a few miles apart, which makes it easy to visit both in one session.

Winton Park offers classic riverside scenes while Avocado Lake provides beautiful reflections on the water. The light here is soft and glowing in the evening, which makes it ideal for sunset sessions.

  • Distance from Downtown Fresno: Around 25 miles east
  • Parking: $5 per vehicle with easy access lots
  • Bathrooms: Available during park hours
  • Best Time of Year: February through May for lush greens or October for golden tones

2. Millerton Lake (Fresno Side and Madera Side)

Millerton Lake is a Central Valley favorite and each side has a completely different feel. The Fresno side near Winchell Cove offers open views of the lake and smooth rocky areas that catch the evening light beautifully. The Madera side feels more rugged and secluded, perfect for couples who want a quiet natural setting.

Both areas are best at sunset when the colors reflect across the water.

  • Distance: About 25 to 35 miles north depending on the entrance
  • Parking: $10 per vehicle with easy access lots
  • Bathrooms: Open year-round at main recreation areas
  • Best Time of Year: Spring for green hills or fall for golden grass

3. Downtown Urban: Fresno and Clovis

If you love city energy, Downtown Fresno is full of murals, textured walls, and rooftop views. The Spiral Parking Garage is one of my favorite spots for skyline photos at sunset.

If you want something cozier, Downtown Clovis has vintage signs, brick buildings, and string lights that feel warm and timeless. Both are excellent choices if you want a more modern look.

Whether you’re dressed up for date night or chasing little ones around downtown, these urban locations offer endless visual variety.

  • Parking: Metered and public lots available, Clovis has easy street parking
  • Bathrooms: Local cafes and restaurants nearby
  • Best Time of Year: All year with the best light in the late afternoon

4. Shaver Lake and Shaver Meadow

If you’re craving mountain air, head up to Shaver Lake or nearby Shaver Meadow. The pine trees, lake views, and open fields make this area one of the most beautiful places near Fresno for photography.

Many of my favorite sessions here end with shoes kicked off, laughter echoing through the trees, and a quiet walk back to the car with cheeks sore from smiling.

  • Distance: About 60 miles northeast
  • Parking: Free in most areas, though it can fill quickly on summer weekends
  • Bathrooms: Limited, depending on location
  • Best Time of Year: Summer for wildflowers, fall for golden color, and winter for snow

5. San Joaquin River Parkway Trust

Lost Lake Park offers shade, water access, and quiet walking paths surrounded by trees. It feels tucked away from the city while still being close.

Morning sessions here are often peaceful with soft mist and gentle light that create a romantic atmosphere.
